Health 2.0 Booth 308
With Cerner, Humetrix Demonstrates DIRECT and Mobile Enabled Provider-to-Patient EHR Exchange for Interoperability at Health 2.0 Fall Conference
Santa Clara, October 1, 2017 - At the Health 2.0 Fall Conference Humetrix will demo its suite of apps; iBlueButton, SOS QR, and Tensio at booth #308. On October 3, Humetrix and Cerner will participate in a session entitled “Breaking Down the Silos” taking place at 11:20 a.m. During the session, Humetrix will demo the award-winning mobile health platform, iBlueButton, which enables patients to immediately receive, at any point of care, their summary health record from any federally certified EHR system using the DIRECT secure messaging protocol. In this demo, Humetrix will show the iBlueButton app receiving a summary record sent by a provider using a Cerner EMR directly on the patient’s mobile device. Under the leadership of its Director and Distinguish Engineer, Greg Meyer, who will lead the demo on the EMR side, Cerner has been a pioneer in the development of the DIRECT secure messaging standard and its deployment nationwide in all Cerner EMR installations. On the patient side, Humetrix will showcase its flagship iBlueButton mobile platform, as demonstrated by Dr. Chris Burrow, Humetrix CMO, which automatically generates DIRECT addresses for each patient profile created in the app. In lieu of multiple portal logins to retrieve their electronic health records from their different providers, the iBlueButton platform lets their users easily and securely receive and assemble on their own mobile devices. Operating its own Health Internet Service Provider (HISP) system, the iBlueButton platform sends “push” notifications when the patient’s EHR summaries or other records (EKG, X-ray report, etc…) sent by their providers’ EMRs are received on the users’ phones and where they are automatically aggregated and securely stored.
While DIRECT has been used for transition of care data exchange between providers, it can also be used for provider to patient data exchange between federally certified EMRs and standard based Blue Button+ enabled patient facing applications, such as iBlueButton. This provider to patient data exchange using DIRECT is critically important, knowing that provider exchange remains limited and that transitions of care are not limited to those resulting from provider referrals, such as emergency care. Placing summary records in the patient’s own hands using existing and ubiquitous technologies – DIRECT enabled EMR on the provider side - and standard DIRECT enabled mobile applications on the patient, can provide an immediate means to interoperability for safer and more cost-effective care.
As Cerner’s Tate Gilchrist told Matthew Holt in a recent Health 2.0 interview, “we are still very much at the beginning of the open API journey, and open platforms are still 3-4 years away”. Until government and industry led efforts succeed, competitive business barriers and workflow issues continue to limit providers’ exchange of patients’ health records, often resulting in costly medical errors and redundant care. By leveraging both the existing DIRECT enabled EMR infrastructure and standard-based mobile technologies like iBlueButton that can receive EMR summaries via DIRECT, we can empower patients to enable health information exchange of their own data”, said Dr. Bettina Experton, CEO of Humetrix.
iBlueButton is available for iOS and Android devices, and allows millions of Americans and their caregivers to receive, update, store, and share their health records securely on their mobile devices. By providing patients mobile access and use of their own health records, whether these are EMR or claim-based, iBlueButton reduces the risk of medical errors and costly redundant tests resulting from an incomplete picture of the patient medical history.
